Happy Kindness Day! Not that you should limit kindness to just one day, but a little reminder can be useful. And knowing that people around you are more predisposed to be kind today?
That’s a good thing, and it’s catching!
If you’re going to be kind to another human, today is the day to do it!
Some hardhearted souls may even question whether small acts of kindness really matter. Spoiler alert: They do!
…
“And here’s the beautiful part: When someone receives kindness, they don’t just feel better, they become better.”
The bonus is that a little kindness is good for both the recipient and the giver. Win win!
How far that little candle throws his beams! So shines a good deed in a naughty world.
— William Shakespeare, Merchant of Venice

As far as quotes go, I’ve been on a kindness kick lately. That’s not a bad thing!

We recently had something of a family emergency. We’re okay and I’m mentioning it now not for sympathy, but because it reminded me that no matter what it looks like from the outside, you never really know what a person is going through.
When you can, err on the side of kindness.

Is the world on fire? Yes, often literally, but that’s not all it is. The world is also astonishingly, incredibly, heart-achingly beautiful.
Today is the UN’s International Day of Happiness, and I’m going to celebrate by remembering that there is so much to see, to love, and to support.
Then I’m going to go do just that.
While we’re at it, here’s the new World Happiness Report and its ranking of countries by happiness.
A key finding: “…people are much too pessimistic about the benevolence of others. For example, when wallets were dropped in the street by researchers, the proportion of returned wallets was far higher than people expected. This is hugely encouraging.”
Well, that makes me happy!
“We don’t have to engage in grand, heroic actions to participate in the process of change. Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.”
— Howard Zinn

I recently had a bit of tax-related drama. I believe I’ve mentioned that I pay taxes in two countries, and that doing said taxes can be a bit of a pain. That’s particularly true when one receives unexpected mail from a tax agency requesting a complicated document within a given time frame.
All fine and good, except when the request gets stuck in the mail during a postal strike and that deadline is now looming.
I reached out to my accountant in a bit of a panic and heard back from her right away. Not only was she familiar with the form that needed to be filled out, but she could do it that day.
The whole process took about an hour in an otherwise unremarkable afternoon, but it brought home the value of people who are able and willing.
I wrote a note thanking her for being an absolute treasure.
Accounting is her profession, of course, and maybe this wasn’t a big deal for her. That said, her timely and thoughtful help was a big deal for me.
In a world that is often dark, it’s worth trying to bring a little light.
The nice part? This isn’t about heroism or constant perfection. It’s about doing what you can, where you can.
If we can do that, we can all be treasures too.

Need a quick pick-me-up? Here you go:
Mischief reigns in a small Canada community after a kidnapping left a man’s garden vacant of the ten ceramic garden gnomes that resided there.
(Don’t worry, there’s a happy ending.)
I’ve had a soft spot for gnomes ever since my parents gave me a copy of this classic: Gnomes by Wil Huygenn (Rien Poortvliet, ill.)
Most of my childhood books went by the wayside over the years, but I’ve slowly built my library back up with replicas of my favorites. I’m looking at a new copy of Gnomes on my bookshelf right now.

― Tom Robbins
May you never lose your childhood delights.
