My mother was asking some questions about genre fiction and the rules of magic. This comic seemed like an appropriate post for today:

Today only (well, yesterday and today, for any time travelers out there)!

Free free free book giveaway from a wide array of science fiction authors. I heard about it through Krista D. Ball, another SFCanada member who is part of the event.

Here’s the main link: Sci-fi Book Blast March 15 – 16, 2024

Books available in the following categories: Adventure, Alien Invasion, Colonization, Crime & Mystery, Cyberpunk, Dystopian, First Contact, Galactic Empire, Humor, Military, Post-Apocalyptic, Short Story Anthologies, Space Opera, Time Travel

Note: it does say to be sure to check that the link is free because database updates don’t always work like they should, and I did run across a few that were either not free or not available. That said, there are over a hundred books in the list so lots to choose from.

I ended last night in a bit of a funk because I 1) finished my book, and 2) the ending was disappointing as hell. Was it supposed to be a dramatic climax and just fizzled, or was the author so committed to his (also annoying) cliffhanger that he decided to just bypass the climax altogether? Ugh.

Either way, I am very much in the market for a new book and new authors, so this giveaway is excellent timing. Hope you find something you like!

The four sayings that lead to wisdom:
I was wrong
I’m sorry
I don’t know
I need help.

It is once again Pi Day! This one is for my father, who memorized (a whole bunch of digits of) pi back in grade school. It was a feat I never managed to equal, but perhaps with the help of this handy song, there’s still hope!

So it looks like Area 51 is not what popular culture thinks.

tl;dr sorry, no aliens

Read the Pentagon UFO report newly released by the Department of Defense

“All investigative efforts, at all levels of classification, concluded that most sightings were ordinary objects and phenomena and the result of misidentification,” the report said.

The report also addresses claims that government and private companies are “reverse-engineering extraterrestrial technology” and hiding it, noting that there is “no empirical evidence for claims” and that “claims involving specific people, known locations technological tests, and documents allegedly involved in or related to the reverse-engineering of extraterrestrial technology, are inaccurate.”

I guess this means social media isn’t an alien plot to get us to destroy ourselves? (At least, that’s what they want us to think;)

I Try

As usual, Tuesdays are not 100% fun here at Chez J but that’s fine. I still hope that your day is a good one.

Being in a bad mood is not a license to be unkind. Being sensitive is not an excuse for being abusive.

Respect is a social responsibility. Treating it as optional reveals a lack of concern for others.

A mark of character is maintaining civility when things don’t go your way.

Four years ago today the World Health Organization declared Covid-19 a pandemic and the world shut down.

Today, I’m taking a moment to remember what it was like in March 2020 and the long months after. To be grateful for the medical community, for front-line workers of all stripes, for vaccines and for all the many ways we’ve adapted and kept going.

Is life back to the way it was? Not exactly. (Minor examples: My hair is still too long, we still have masks kicking around for special occasions like doctor’s visits, and the thought of seeing a movie in a theatre still seems like a lot.) Covid is still a thing, not least for those with lingering symptoms. Even so, we have accomplished something that didn’t seem guaranteed four years ago: We’ve built a new normal.

Could it be better? Of course, and that’s what the future is for. Today, though, I’m happy to look back and see how far we’ve come since that day. And I’m glad we’re making that trip together.

Whelp, I’ve just used my tremendous powers of logic and persuasion to convince Mr Man to enjoy the rest of the weekend so that he doesn’t burn out in the week ahead.

It is, after all, the start of Daylight Saving Time, which means we lose an hour of weekend time. And really, it’s not so much the hour, it’s the feeling that there wasn’t enough chill time to begin with and now we’re minus an hour.

Given that, I think I’ll take my own advice.

Happy Sunday!

Purrfection

My time continues to be dedicated to the joys of tax filing. If only filing were as easy as paying your fees at this Massachusetts library!

A Purr-fect Program- A Massachusetts Public Library Is Waiving Fines When Shown A Cat Photo

Through the entire month of March, fines will be cleared for anyone who shows up to the library and shows a photo of a cat. The library is already fine-free, so this is aimed to help those struggling with fines for book-related accidents.
