I Try

As usual, Tuesdays are not 100% fun here at Chez J but that’s fine. I still hope that your day is a good one.

Being in a bad mood is not a license to be unkind. Being sensitive is not an excuse for being abusive.

Respect is a social responsibility. Treating it as optional reveals a lack of concern for others.

A mark of character is maintaining civility when things don’t go your way.

— Adam Grant

Four years ago today the World Health Organization declared Covid-19 a pandemic and the world shut down.

Today, I’m taking a moment to remember what it was like in March 2020 and the long months after. To be grateful for the medical community, for front-line workers of all stripes, for vaccines and for all the many ways we’ve adapted and kept going.

Is life back to the way it was? Not exactly. (Minor examples: My hair is still too long, we still have masks kicking around for special occasions like doctor’s visits, and the thought of seeing a movie in a theatre still seems like a lot.) Covid is still a thing, not least for those with lingering symptoms. Even so, we have accomplished something that didn’t seem guaranteed four years ago: We’ve built a new normal.

Could it be better? Of course, and that’s what the future is for. Today, though, I’m happy to look back and see how far we’ve come since that day. And I’m glad we’re making that trip together.

Whelp, I’ve just used my tremendous powers of logic and persuasion to convince Mr Man to enjoy the rest of the weekend so that he doesn’t burn out in the week ahead.

It is, after all, the start of Daylight Saving Time, which means we lose an hour of weekend time. And really, it’s not so much the hour, it’s the feeling that there wasn’t enough chill time to begin with and now we’re minus an hour.

Given that, I think I’ll take my own advice.

Happy Sunday!

Purrfection

My time continues to be dedicated to the joys of tax filing. If only filing were as easy as paying your fees at this Massachusetts library!

A Purr-fect Program- A Massachusetts Public Library Is Waiving Fines When Shown A Cat Photo

Through the entire month of March, fines will be cleared for anyone who shows up to the library and shows a photo of a cat. The library is already fine-free, so this is aimed to help those struggling with fines for book-related accidents.

Words of Wisdom

My high school teacher accidentally gave me a lifelong mantra: “If you think you hate everyone, have something to eat. If you think everyone hates you, go to sleep.”

For anyone facing a challenge today, two quotes:

“…very often a risk is worth taking simply for the sake of taking it. There is something enlivening about expanding our self-definition, and a risk does exactly that. Selecting a challenge and meeting it creates a sense of self-empowerment that becomes the ground for further successful challenges.”

— Julia Cameron, The Artist’s Way

“So do it. If you win, you win, and if you lose, you win.”

One of our neighbors is installing a home generator. Our area has relatively stable power but events like the Great Power Out-ening of 2022 do tend to stick with you, and they have had it.

Now they’ll be equipped for a future of ice storms and high winds and general grief from the joys of climate change.

We do have a portable generator, but in case of another long-term outage event it’s nice to know that we can pop next door for a cup of electrons.
