It’s June. June!*

I’m in the mood to do new things. It’s also the beginning of the month, which, thanks to the “fresh start effect” is a great time to embark on new ventures.

“The fresh-start effect hinges on the idea that we don’t feel as perfect about our past as we’d like. We’re always striving to be better. And when we can wipe out all those failures and look at a clean slate, it makes us feel more capable and drives us forward.”

— Dr. Katherine Milkman

Behavioral nudges are my jam.

I actually did start a new project yesterday, and it felt good. Today I decided to think about said project while crossing off the residual items weighing down my list. That felt good too.

Now it’s time to dive in.

* I would have written about this yesterday but you know, Tuesdays.

Oh, this is fun. If you have a little map, environment and/or geography geek streak, check out this interactive:

“Do unto those downstream as you would have those upstream do unto you.”

― Wendell Berry

When a raindrop falls, where does it go? If it falls on my hometown, it flows 390km to the Atlantic Ocean.

If it falls on the Denver Broncos’ Mile High 50-yard line, just east of the Continental Divide, the path to the Gulf of Mexico is 3862km!

Click a starting point and the site will calculate a route and then do a visual fly-over. I wish it covered places outside the US but it’s still a fun and impressive window into data from the always excellent USGS.*

* Ah, the USGS, font of so much maptitude! Wait, is that a volcano webcam? Stop browsing, woman, you have work to do! But remind me to tell you my volcano story someday:)

What would you do if you could go back in time for, say, one day? When would you go, and perhaps just as importantly, where?

For today’s educational adventure I learned how to make a portal. Next time I’ll choose an image with a puddle for the reflection, but the effect is still pretty magic.

So, we have a target place, a target time, and a portal. Who wants to go first?

Fiction-related aside: Time travel usually isn’t my genre (weird for someone with a history degree once upon a time, but there it is), but this series about historians tasked with maintaining the time stream is fun:

“History does not always repeat itself. Sometimes it just yells, ‘Can’t you remember anything I told you?’ and lets fly with a club.”

― John W. Campbell Jr.

I ran across this bit of text and don’t remember its origins. I *think* I wrote it as a summary after watching one of Carol Dweck’s TED talks on learning and the growth mindset, but I can’t be sure (apologies if I missed the author). Still seems like good advice.

A motivation problem is solved by thinking (convincing yourself that something is important). A follow-through problem is solved by not thinking (don’t deliberate, just act).
