Things I’d rather not do today, but will:

  • work on the day-job project that’s been lurking on my to-do list
  • figure out what to do with the sadly inadequate results of a new brownie recipe
  • take care of some “just in case” items; thanks, tornado warning!

My future self will thank me. Probably.

It’s been a weird day. (Do I say that a lot? Feels like I might, but whatever. It’s definitely true today. And maybe I just expect too much in the way of normality.)

Yesterday was signings and beer and gelato. All good. Today? Things that can go wrong, do.

I’ve written about this before, in The Balance. It’s still funny, and still (mostly) true. And now I’m off to set things right.

You, on the other hand, might be interested to know that (checks extensive list of interesting factoids) there is a secret tunnel network under Chicago.

“Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!”

― Sylvester Stallone, Rocky Balboa

The (P)A Team

Here’s a quick shoutout to Pennsylvania, who managed to reopen I-95 less than two weeks after the tanker explosion that shut down the highway. By utilizing creative materials and new ways of problem solving, the government and union workers did what many thought could not be done.

I-95 bridge reopens, less than two weeks after tanker explosion

This sort of approach is exactly what we need to win a future filled with unexpected challenges.

And I love it when a plan comes together!

Martha Wells, creator of Murderbot, the recently published Witch King and other terrific tales, recently posted a copy of her co-guest of honor speech from WisCon. It’s worth reading.

marthawells | WisCon Speech

It doesn’t always seem like it from our moment in time, but there actually has been a lot of progress in the science fiction and fantasy world during the 30 years of my career.

In it, she applauds how far we’ve come while pointing out the issues that remain, and that progress is “not a perpetual motion machine.” To keep moving up, it must be protected, cared for, and cultivated.

Which we can absolutely, positively do.

For various day job reasons I’m feeling a wee bit tired. I have no deep thoughts about this, just a sense that I could really use a vacation (yes, another one! 😉 or at least a tiny little break.

Time to browse the weird and wild world of Google Street View, courtesy of this site:

How many times can I hit the Random button before it gets old? …

Wait, there’s a giant statue of a quarter-pound burger in Rapid City, South Dakota?! Of course there is🙂
