I have a soft spot for wacky and fun inventions, and this one is right up there.
Watch This Guy’s Interactive Wooden Pixel Machine Make Art in Real Time
Sitting in my office in NYC, I sent a CNC machine in a guy’s workshop in Wisconsin a 40 by 25 pixel drawing and watched it flip hand painted wooden blocks across a grid, one by one, until the glorious smiling 404 Media logo appeared—then watched it slowly erase, like a giant Etch A Sketch, moving on to the next drawing.
For more on the why and the how and the seriously?, see I spent 6 years building a ridiculous wooden pixel display.
Want to play (and have a Bluesky account)? Vist kilopixel and submit your art!

Perhaps you have fond memories of staring up at the sky during summer break, letting clouds drift across your subconscious until “Look! An elephant! An pterodactyl! Jabba the Hutt!”

I enjoy the fact that there is always something new to learn. Some things are big, like the latest on asteroid deflection from NASA’s DART program, and some are small, like the fact that Dan Aykroyd had a cameo in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. (Did you know that? I didn’t, until last night when I did a double take and said, “Wait, the guy with the mustache and the British accent. Was that Dan Aykroyd?” It was!)
Of global importance or not, these facts are all interesting reminders that there is always something new around the corner, if you keep looking.
And that, I think, is magic.

Not getting everything done you’d hoped? Life intruding into your carefully made plans? It happens. Some days are weird.
And some days you just need to give yourself a break.

Why Tolkien thought “sub-creation” was the secret to great fantasy and science fiction
There is something about great fantasy that emboldens the spirit and gives fire to the fight. It is found not only in the words and plot but in its atemporality. It tells us that there is something universal to the human condition that ought to be celebrated. It is something as true for Anglo-Saxons in their snowy mead halls as it is for office drones changing their login passwords.
It says that no matter what monsters we face, we shall overcome and live on. We shall not be defeated.
That’s a pretty good secret.
