Not everyone likes Canada Geese (they can be messy), but I love to hear them calling as they fly north to the river, pointing the way to spring.

I saw my first flower buds yesterday, in a planter filled with lovely little purple crocus plants. We still have a tiny bit of snow in the yard and my mother reports snow down south, but even so it’s starting to feel like spring.
It’s good timing, too. Today is Økodag, or Dancing Cow Day in Denmark, when the country’s 200,000 organic cows leave their winter barns and head out to greener pastures. This year is extra special as the event has been on hold for the past two years.
Danes revel in ‘dancing cow day’ for first time since Covid outbreak
“The cows are so happy to be outdoors, to feel the sun and the wind, that they dance,” she said. “Out in the field, a cow can also go for her favourite dishes – grass, clover, various herbs etc.”
Happy spring!

Like most kids I spent a lot of time on road trips asking, “Are we there yet?” It wasn’t that I wanted to arrive, necessarily. I liked the road part of road trips, with the ever-changing scenery, the usually forbidden foods from exotic restaurants like McDonald’s, and the sense of making progress.
I enjoy progress, the sense of action, of leveling up. I also really like finishing things, but some days that’s not in the cards. That’s particularly true on days when I am learning a new genre, a new technique, or a new idea. Those days, I have to be satisfied with knowing that I’ve moved that much farther down the road.
I spent much of my fun time today learning more about designing for 3D objects. By the end of the afternoon my screen looked like this:

Yes, my brain is now as scrambled as you might think, but it’s a fun project. And soon I won’t just be moving toward my destination, I’ll be there.

This may seem late to some of my more southerly readers, but today is the first time it feels like spring. The sun is out, the sky is blue, and I went out for a walk with Mr. Man and didn’t have to shovel. (Sure, there’s still snow on the ground, but I saw my first motorcycle of the year, kids are running around in shorts, and robins are all over the yard.
It’s a good day!
The Sun did all that and more. Let’s go for a little visit, shall we?

Thanks to my step-mother, I am ever-so-marginally Irish-adjacent, so today I give you all a lucky four-leaf clover. Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

The bad news is that it’s Tuesday. The good news is that despite pandemic shortages and broken-down delivery trucks, the new dishwasher should arrive later today.
I’ll take that as a win!

The world remains a challenging place in many ways but today I’m lucky to be able to carve a bit of calm out of the quagmire, mostly by avoiding the news. I’m working on a cookbook update, paying taxes, continuing yesterday’s fun design project, and helped* disconnect the old dishwasher. I also heard back on one of my favorite stories and was very happy to get an acceptance. It’s always nice to share what you love.
Not too bad for a Sunday. Now, where’s my book?

* A very little. Mr Man is good enough not to need much help.

What with the war and the climate and the pandemic and all, the news can be a bit of a nightmare these days. Sometimes it can be hard to stay positive. What might take the edge off?
How about a pep talk from kindergartners?
A new hotline offers pep talks from kindergartners : NPR
If you need a pep talk from kindergartners, press 3. If you need to hear kids laughing with delight, press 4.
Yes, please. And thank you.

I finished a thing!
I can’t get into details because Mr. Man is giving this thing to someone as a gift, and that someone has been known to visit this site.
That said, it felt pretty great to conceptualize the thing, start the thing, work through the inevitable issues that came up while making the thing, and then finish the thing.
Pretty freaking great.
